How to Improve Your Instagram Bio: A Simple Formula and Examples

Your bio has 150 characters to explain who you are and what to do next. Here is a clear structure, common mistakes and example rewrites.

Your bio is the one piece of text every visitor reads. It has a hard limit of 150 characters, so every word has to work. The good news is that a clear bio follows a simple pattern.

A four-part structure

  1. Who it is for or what you do. "Home workouts for busy parents" tells a visitor immediately if they are in the right place.
  2. What they will get. Tips, routines, recipes, reviews, behind-the-scenes. Name the content.
  3. A reason to trust you (optional). A real credential, a place, a result you can stand behind. Skip it rather than invent one.
  4. One call to action. Tell people the single next step: follow, download the guide, book a call, shop.

Examples

Before: "Living my best life. Coffee lover. DMs open."

After: "Budget travel tips for first-time solo travellers
Itineraries and packing lists every week
Free packing list below"

Before: "Photographer | Dreamer | Creator"

After: "Wedding photographer in Lisbon
Natural, unposed portraits
Booking for next season: message me"

Common mistakes

  • Only emojis or a slogan. They look nice but say nothing about what you post.
  • No contact route. If you want brand collaborations, say "collabs: email in link" or similar.
  • Several calls to action. Three different asks mean none gets done.
  • Stale information. Review the bio every few months, especially seasonal offers.
  • Using keywords your audience would not use. The name field is searchable, so put your main keyword there too.

Check your link and highlights too

The link in your bio is part of the bio. Send people somewhere that matches the call to action, and make sure it works on a phone. Story highlights can answer the questions a bio has no room for, such as pricing, FAQs or best posts.

A rewrite exercise you can do in ten minutes

  1. Write what you post about in one plain sentence, as if telling a friend.
  2. Cut it to fit about 60 characters. That is your first line.
  3. Add one line about what followers get, such as "weekly recipes and meal plans".
  4. Add the single action you want, then read the whole bio out loud.
  5. Show it to two people who do not follow you and ask what they think you post. If they get it wrong, rewrite.

Different goals, different bios

Growing followers: lead with the benefit of following, such as the topic and how often you post. Brand work: make your niche and contact route obvious and link to a media kit. Selling something: name the product or service in plain words and link straight to where to buy. Local business: include the city or area, because searchers use it.

Small details that add up

Use the name field for your main keyword, such as "Maya | Vegan Recipes". Keep your handle simple and consistent across platforms so people can find you. Use line breaks, and use emojis sparingly as bullets rather than decoration. Pin your best three posts so a visitor sees proof straight away.

Test and review

Change one thing at a time, note the date, and look at profile activity in Instagram's own Insights a few weeks later. Small changes are easy to misjudge after a few days.

The Instagram Profile Analyzer checks your bio against this checklist (length, call to action, contact route, readability, niche) and suggests rewrites you can edit. Treat them as drafts: they are suggestions, not official Instagram scores.
